Today, many auction websites are making it difficult to sell your item while still coming away with a profit of some sort because of their high service fees. Even so, it is still possible to make a profit, but the trend has changed significantly. Frequently, the items being sold have a ‘locked price’, or a ‘buy it now’ price, apposed to the auction styles of the past with the starting bid being set at a dollar. The ‘buy it now’ or ‘locked price’ is used, of course, to ensure that the seller makes a profit. There are hundreds of different websites where you can sell your items today. Just be sure you lock in a profit that is higher than your expenses and fees.
Some have abandoned using auction websites altogether as their selling source, instead of adjusting to the changing times. One of the advantages of using a big auction website (like E-bay) is the fact that it gives you a visible place to sell your item with relative ease. And yet, that may or may not translate into a profit for you. On the downside, the larger auction websites are experiencing fewer buyers because of the higher prices. With fewer buyers, it may be harder to sell all of your inventory. People love to feel that they got a steal-of-a-deal and something for below value.
Likewise, we have to look at these businesses of today as businesses to mimic, and not as a place to make money for ourselves like we have in the past. It is time to copy what these businesses do best, and that is to make profit. If you were looking for a business model of the ‘big boys’, then that would be a copy cat of what they did to get where they are today. These companies did not force people to use their services. You may say that is impossible, so here is some things to learn from their models.
Get the money (your profit) from being a service provider, apposed to a product seller.
Sell from your own website or blog. I do warn you that a website or blog takes time to build and a lot of hard work, but having your own website can really make you a profits for the years to come. Websites are for the long-term business mindset. If you are wanting to just sell items in the short term, this can be as simple as putting a ‘For Sale’ ad in your local newspaper or posting a sign on the bulletin board at the mall/shopping center. There is nothing wrong with starting small. With this you don’t not a website to start selling.
The next question is ‘where to get your products from’? The best way is to search for a wholesaler of the product you would like to sell. Just make sure you count all the costs first, before you dive in. Make sure you can sell the item in small quantities and in ‘small scale’. And be sure there is a profit in it before you invest big money into a large wholesale shipment. If there is not a profit move onto trying a different product that makes you a money with a profit.
If you are just starting out, start small. Try not to get ahead of yourself. That will only cause you a money melt-down, and there are many examples of that to study if you so desire.
Where to start selling items on auction websites (such as E-bay) is not like it was in the past when you could just throw an item up for sale, ship it out, receive the payment, and pay the small commission fee for using the auction website while laughing all the way to the bank.
Today some of the biggest online business ventures have folded-up shop, while others have hiked their service and shipping fees to about the size of a tycoon estate.
